The Kitchen

The kitchen in pickleball, officially called the non-volley zone (NVZ), is the 7-foot area on both sides of the net. Players are not allowed to volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in the kitchen. However, you can step into it to hit a ball that bounces first. The kitchen rule ensures longer rallies and prevents players from dominating the net area.
